Ikat Rugs

Ikat is one of India's oldest textile arts: the thread is tied and dyed before it is woven, so every motif comes off the loom with a soft, feathered edge. Our ikat rugs draw that edge into hand-tufted New Zealand wool, from cool blue-and-ivory designs to bold crimson medallions. Each is available in standard sizes up to 9 × 12 ft or made to your exact measurements.

The Pochampally is an ikat drawn in wool. Every motif on it, the sky-blue blossoms down the centre, the indigo lanterns hanging either side and the moss-green paisleys climbing the edges, has the soft, feathered outline of a thread that was dyed before it was woven. It is named for the Telangana village where weavers still tie and dye each warp by hand so the pattern only appears on the loom.

On a woven ikat that blur is an accident of the dye; here it is drawn on purpose. The edges of each shape step and flicker where they meet the ivory ground, so from across a room the rug reads as cloth rather than print, and up close every colour keeps its own crisp field of pile.

It is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand to a dense, even cut. Four colours do the work: an ivory ground, a pale sky blue, a deep indigo and a soft moss green. The pattern runs out to an indigo band at the edge rather than stopping at a formal border, so motifs are cut off at the sides the way they would be on a length of fabric.

The palette is cool and fresh rather than traditional. It lifts a white or grey room, sits well with pale oak, cane and brass, and gives a guest bedroom, a study or a sunlit reading corner colour without anything heavy.

A new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The ivory ground shows marks sooner than a dark field, so it is happiest where shoes come off. Made-to-order sizes are redrawn to their own proportions, so the motifs keep their shape rather than being stretched.

The 4 × 6 ft rug photographed here is a single piece, in stock and ready to ship. Rows of lozenge medallions march across a deep crimson field, each one ringed in ivory with a saw-tooth edge, and the rows alternate as they go: one with a green ring around a chocolate-brown heart, the next with a saffron ring around a green one. It takes its name from the Odisha town whose bandha weavers tie and dye every thread before it reaches the loom, and whose saris carry exactly this kind of jagged, vibrating outline.

In a woven ikat that zig-zag edge is where the dyed threads slip against one another. Here it is drawn deliberately into the wool, so every medallion seems to shimmer at its rim while the colours inside stay clean and solid. Between the medallions, small green seed shapes and broken brown marks scatter across the red like the flecks of a hand-dyed cloth.

It is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand to a dense, even cut. Five colours carry the design: crimson, chocolate brown, ivory, saffron and a bright leaf green. The pattern runs straight off the long sides rather than stopping at a border, half-medallions cut through at the edge as they would be on a length of fabric, with a band of brown pile closing each end.

This is a rug that sets the tone of a room rather than sitting quietly in it. It warms a white or grey interior instantly, holds its own against blue-and-white prints and dark timber, and suits an entrance, a study or a reading corner that wants colour underfoot. The busy all-over pattern is also forgiving: it hides wear and everyday marks far better than a plain field.

A new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming.
