The rug is built the same way, as architecture rather than ornament: an ivory ground divided by blocks of stone grey, with arches set into it in rust and burnt orange, and panels of fine stripes that read like brickwork and louvred light. There is no border; the composition runs straight to the edges, so the whole rug reads as one elevation.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. The stripes are the demanding part: every one is tufted as its own line, a few millimetres from the next, so the rust, orange and grey stay crisp against each other instead of blurring. Up close the solid arches and the striped panels carry a slightly different texture, which gives the surface a quiet relief in raking light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe palette is warm but grounded. The terracotta tones pick up teak, walnut, leather and brass, while the grey and ivory keep it from overwhelming a room, so it works under a sofa or a desk in an otherwise neutral space and holds its own on a dark wooden floor, as photographed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming.
