At the centre of an open ivory field sits a stepped octagon in warm grey, framed in brick red and quartered by a cobalt-blue cross that holds four lilac cartouches, each with a red flower at its heart. Cobalt pendants rise from the top and bottom of the medallion, butter-yellow hooked brackets reach out from its sides, and the four corners of the field are cut away into grey and red spandrels. Around it runs a lilac border of grey cartouches and small rosettes, lined on the inside by a cobalt guard stripe dotted in red, black and yellow.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. Every motif is outlined in a single black line and the colour inside it is laid flat, without shading, so the rug reads as a drawing of a village carpet rather than a copy of one: the geometry is traditional, the hand is graphic. The ivory field is left wide and quiet around the medallion, which is what keeps seven colours from crowding each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCobalt is the strongest note, but the lilac is what makes it unusual. A traditional carpet would carry madder red or indigo in the border; the soft violet makes the whole piece lighter and more modern. It sits well with blue and white prints, dark wood, and pinks and florals, as photographed, and suits a bedroom, study or reading corner as readily as a living room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The ivory field shows marks sooner than a dark ground would, so it is happiest under a chair, bed or coffee table rather than at an entrance, and rotating it twice a year keeps wear even.
