On the rug it becomes a set of discs, each split cleanly down the middle into terracotta and rust, as though half-turned from the light. Around them the composition is built in blocks: blush pink, a pale lilac grey and deep plum, terracotta panels with softly rounded corners, and bands of fine plum pinstripes. There is no border; the design runs straight to the edges, closer to a modernist poster than a traditional rug.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. The split discs are the demanding part: two colours have to meet along a single straight line without either bleeding into the other, and the pinstripes are each tufted as their own line, a few millimetres apart, so they stay crisp rather than reading as a blur of plum. Up close, each shape sits in a faint outline in the pile, which gives the surface a quiet relief in raking light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe palette is warm but soft. Blush and lilac grey keep the terracotta from shouting, and the plum gives the whole thing weight, so it sits comfortably with walnut, brass, leather and dark wooden floors, as photographed, and suits a bedroom or study as well as a living room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The blush and lilac areas show marks sooner than the terracotta and plum, so it is better under a sofa, desk or bed than at an entrance, and rotating it twice a year keeps wear even. Made-to-order sizes are redrawn to their own proportions rather than stretched, so on an 8 × 10 ft, which is squarer than the 4 × 6, the blocks and discs are rearranged slightly to fit; the palette and design language stay the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 4 × 6 ft rug photographed here is in stock and ready to ship.
