Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand so the surface sits even and soft underfoot. Tufting is quicker than knotting, and the price follows, but the wool is the same long-staple New Zealand fibre used in our hand-knotted rugs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt the centre sits a star-shaped medallion in ivory, burgundy and sand-gold, picked out in rose pink, with a pendant at each end. A wide ivory border of burgundy cartouches and small pink crosses frames the field, held inside a comb-toothed pink guard and finished with a narrow band of the same heathered blue at the edge. The palette leans on the rose and ivory of Mughal ornament.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe heathered yarn means no two stretches of the field look quite alike, and the pattern of light and dark flecks will fall differently on a rug made to your size.
