Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand to a dense, even cut that sits close and soft underfoot. Where one colour meets the next, the pile is carved back along the line, so the curve of the arch and the edges of the bar read crisply from across the room instead of blurring into one another.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition is deliberately off-centre. The arch rises along one long side and runs almost the full length of the rug, stepping in to a narrower column in its lower third. The bar crosses that step, half on the blue and half on the ivory, and locks the two shapes together. Laid with the arch towards a window or the head of a bed, it draws the eye up the length of the room; turned end to end, it reads as a column with a bar at its foot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA plain field shows everything the wool does. The pile catches the light differently depending on which way it lies, so the blue looks brighter from one end of the rug and deeper from the other, and it shifts as the rug is walked on. That shading is the wool, not a flaw.
