There is no border and no centre. Bands of deep navy, blush pink, pale sky blue, sage green and charcoal run across a cream ground, pooling and narrowing like colour floated on water and drawn through with a comb, and carry on unbroken to every edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. Every colour is tufted as its own shape with a clean edge where it meets the next, so the marbling reads as crisp ribbons of flat colour rather than a blur, and you can follow a single thread of pale blue or pink across much of the rug. Navy covers the most ground and anchors the whole piece, so the pastels read as light moving across something dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA marbled rug works where a patterned one would argue with the room. It has no motif to line up and no border to square to the furniture, so it sits happily at an angle, under a coffee table or beside a bed. The navy holds its own against dark floors and wood, as photographed, while the blush and sage pick up softer colour in cushions and art.
