Saffron vines branch and curl across the whole field, arching into mirrored ogees, and along them grows everything a garden bed holds: lilac and pink blossoms, small ivory stars, olive and powder-blue leaves. The field is drawn to mirror top to bottom and side to side, so it reads as one continuous bed rather than a scatter of flowers. It takes its name from Nishat Bagh, the terraced garden that steps down to the Dal Lake in Srinagar.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. Colour is laid in flat, unshaded blocks, a blossom in lilac with a single pink heart, a leaf in olive or powder blue, so the drawing stays crisp against the navy instead of dissolving into it. A narrow pink band, dotted in navy and ivory, frames the field. Beyond it, a wide powder-blue border repeats one motif all the way round: an ivory and saffron blossom with an olive and navy heart, set between sprays of olive leaves. The edges are bound in the same powder-blue wool, with no fringe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNavy is the most forgiving ground a patterned rug can have. It anchors a pale room without darkening it. The saffron in the vines picks up warm wood, brass and leather, while the lilac and powder blue sit easily with blue and white prints, ikat and grey linen, as photographed. At 4 × 6 ft it belongs beside a reading chair, at the foot of a bed or in a study; the larger sizes will hold a living-room seating group.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The dark ground and busy pattern hide everyday wear well, but blot spills promptly and rotate the rug twice a year to keep wear and light even. Wool is dyed in batches, so a made-to-order rug may sit a shade apart from the one photographed.
