Above and below it, two smaller ivory-and-gold medallions throw out short gold rays, and the rest of the field is scattered with roundels in gold, sky blue and ivory, each with a red or navy eye, and with eight-pointed stars in gold and sky blue. Around it runs a wide ivory border of sky-blue cartouches filled with red hooked motifs, alternating with small red and gold rosettes, held between two red guard stripes beaded in ivory and gold.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. The cartouches are outlined in a single navy line and every colour inside the design is laid flat, without shading, and the edges of each shape are left slightly soft, the way ikat dyeing blurs a line. It reads as embroidery translated into wool rather than a carpet copied from another carpet.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNavy is the ground here rather than the accent, which sets the Orchha apart from the ivory-field rugs in the collection. It is a rug that carries a room on its own: five colours at full strength, balanced by the calm ivory frame.
