It takes its name from the Gujarat town where Salvi families still weave patola, a double ikat in which warp and weft are each tied and dyed before they meet on the loom, so the pattern only comes together in the weaving.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe layout is a lattice of pointed diamonds. Each one holds a black ring with an aubergine core and an ivory centre, and the space between is full of aubergine scrolls and small black marks. Where the diamonds meet, a black spindle motif stands on its own axis. Every outline steps and feathers into the ivory the way a resist-dyed thread does, so from across a room the rug reads as cloth, and up close each colour keeps its own crisp field of pile.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand to a dense, even cut. The pattern runs out to a black band at the edge rather than stopping at a formal border, so the diamonds are cut off at the sides the way they would be on a length of fabric.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe palette is graphic but not loud. Aubergine is softer than black and warmer than grey, so the rug works with charcoal, walnut, aged brass and deep velvet as easily as it lifts a white room. It suits a living room, a dressing room or a bedroom that wants pattern without a lot of colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The ivory ground shows marks sooner than a dark field, so it is happiest where shoes come off.
