Fine charcoal lines cross the ivory field on the diagonal, and each diamond they enclose holds a single flowering plant: a slender dove-grey stem with ochre and saffron blossoms at its tips, chocolate-brown leaves at its foot, and a darker brown flower at its crown. Where the lines cross, a small brown rosette pins the trellis together. The idea comes from the \u003ci\u003ejaal\u003c\/i\u003e, the flowering net that covers the marble inlay and carved screens of Mughal tombs, Sikandra's among them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNothing in the lattice is ruled. The charcoal lines wander slightly, the petals are cut with soft, irregular edges, and no two plants are drawn quite alike, so the field reads as a hand-drawn garden rather than a printed repeat. Instead of a border running all the way round, each end closes with three bands of ochre stripes, leaving the long sides open so the trellis appears to carry on past the edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. The edges are bound in ivory wool, with no fringe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe palette is autumnal and warm: ochre, saffron and chocolate brown on ivory, cooled by dove grey and the charcoal line.
