A chain of open diamonds drops down one side of the field, two of them holding small marks of their own; arrows, chevrons and beaded totems run in loose columns beside them; a triangle hatched like a woven tassel sits near the foot. Nothing is mirrored and nothing quite repeats, so the rug reads as if it were drawn freehand. A band of crossed lines closes each end.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared by hand to a dense, springy cut that is soft enough to sit on. The edges are wool-bound in ivory with no fringe, so it lies clean against a floor and nothing catches underfoot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and ivory is the most forgiving pairing there is. It grounds a white room, lifts a dark floor and sits beside walnut, leather, cane or brass without a fight — which is why it works as easily under a living-room chair as beside a bed or in a study.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The ivory ground shows marks sooner than a dark field, so it is happiest where shoes come off.
