Description
The Lucknow is built around its blue: a heathered, two-tone field that reads like washed denim, flecked light and dark so it looks like texture rather than flat colour.
It is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand so the surface sits even and soft underfoot. Tufting is quicker than knotting, and the price follows, but the wool is the same long-staple New Zealand fibre used in our hand-knotted rugs.
At the centre sits a star-shaped medallion in ivory, burgundy and sand-gold, picked out in rose pink, with a pendant at each end. A wide ivory border of burgundy cartouches and small pink crosses frames the field, held inside a comb-toothed pink guard and finished with a narrow band of the same heathered blue at the edge. The palette leans on the rose and ivory of Mughal ornament.
The heathered yarn means no two stretches of the field look quite alike, and the pattern of light and dark flecks will fall differently on a rug made to your size. A new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming.
The 4 × 6 ft rug photographed here is in stock and ready to ship. Four larger standard sizes, up to 9 × 12 ft, are made to order in 4–6 weeks, as is any size cut to your exact measurements.

Materials & Construction — Hand-Tufted
Wool is punched through a stretched canvas backing with a hand-held tufting tool, secured with a latex adhesive and finished with a cotton scrim. The result is a dense, deeply plush pile with the pattern carved in relief — the softest underfoot of our constructions.
Made by hand from natural yarn, so slight variation in colour, pile height and finished dimensions is intrinsic to the piece, not a defect.
Rug Care
- Vacuum periodically with the beater bar or brush roll switched off — suction only. Never brush or scrub the pile.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Press, don’t rub — rubbing drives the stain deeper and distorts the weave.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to prevent flattening and permanent indentation.
- If a thread lifts, never pull it — trim it level with the pile using sharp scissors.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the dyes.
- Expect noticeable shedding for the first few months. This is normal for a tufted pile and reduces steadily with gentle, regular vacuuming.
- Because the pile is set into an adhesive backing, never soak or steam clean this rug — excess moisture breaks down the backing. Have it dry-cleaned by a rug specialist.
- An underlay is recommended — it stops slipping, cushions the pile and extends the life of the rug.
- Have the rug professionally cleaned periodically. Avoid machine washing, bleach and harsh solvents.
Sizing & Placement
As a guide: in a living room, the front legs of all seating should rest on the rug. In a dining room, allow at least 60 cm beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, allow 45–60 cm of rug either side of the bed. Custom dimensions are available on most pieces — enter your measurements on this page, or speak with a design consultant.
Craftsmanship
The design is traced onto the backing and worked tuft by tuft with a hand tool, then sheared and carved so the pattern stands in relief. Finishing, binding and the final shear are all done by hand.

How a rug is made changes everything.
Hand-Knotted
Every knot tied by hand around the warp — the most enduring and collectible construction. Months on the loom; a rug made to be passed down.
Hand-Tufted
Wool punched through a backing and sheared to a plush, even pile. Quicker to make and gentler on price, soft underfoot.
Flat-Weave
Woven flat with no pile — reversible, light and crisp in pattern. Easy to lift, air and layer over a larger rug.
Hand-Loomed
Woven on a loom with a subtle loop or cut pile — a quiet, contemporary texture between knotted and flat.
Know the feel before you choose.
Tufted by hand, sheared by eye.
Wool is punched through a stretched backing strand by strand, then sheared level by hand until the pile sits true. The finish is plush and even; the making is quicker than knotting, and the price follows.
