Description
The Ooty is a summer garden in full flower. Big orange and marigold peonies, their petals traced in fuchsia, open across a pale dove-grey ground, and around them comes everything else in the bed: white and lilac blooms, sprays of pink buds on fine navy stems, olive and cornflower-blue leaves, and small blue and navy birds with white eyes darting between it all. It takes its name from the hill town whose botanical garden fills with blooms every May, and it has the same cheerful excess.
It is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand. The colour is laid in flat, unshaded blocks, so a peony is built from orange, marigold and a single fuchsia line rather than a blend, and the drawing reads bold and graphic, closer to a painted chintz than to a traditional carpet. Nine colours sit side by side with no outline between them, and each one stops cleanly where the next begins.
This is a rug that sets the colour of a room rather than follows it. On a dark floor against plain walls, as photographed, it does the work of a painting. It takes well to blue and white prints, ikat, cane and warm wood, and because orange and blue carry equal weight across the field, it sits as happily in a warm scheme as a cool one. At 4 × 6 ft it is at home beside a reading chair, at the foot of a bed, or in a child's room.
A new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The busy pattern is forgiving of everyday marks, but the pale ground will hold a spill that is left, so blot promptly, and rotate it twice a year to keep wear even. Made-to-order sizes are redrawn rather than stretched: on a larger rug the pattern is extended across the field instead of scaled up, so the blooms and birds stay the size you see here.

Materials & Construction — Hand-Tufted
Wool is punched through a stretched canvas backing with a hand-held tufting tool, secured with a latex adhesive and finished with a cotton scrim. The result is a dense, deeply plush pile with the pattern carved in relief — the softest underfoot of our constructions.
Made by hand from natural yarn, so slight variation in colour, pile height and finished dimensions is intrinsic to the piece, not a defect.
Rug Care
- Vacuum periodically with the beater bar or brush roll switched off — suction only. Never brush or scrub the pile.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Press, don’t rub — rubbing drives the stain deeper and distorts the weave.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to prevent flattening and permanent indentation.
- If a thread lifts, never pull it — trim it level with the pile using sharp scissors.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the dyes.
- Expect noticeable shedding for the first few months. This is normal for a tufted pile and reduces steadily with gentle, regular vacuuming.
- Because the pile is set into an adhesive backing, never soak or steam clean this rug — excess moisture breaks down the backing. Have it dry-cleaned by a rug specialist.
- An underlay is recommended — it stops slipping, cushions the pile and extends the life of the rug.
- Have the rug professionally cleaned periodically. Avoid machine washing, bleach and harsh solvents.
Sizing & Placement
As a guide: in a living room, the front legs of all seating should rest on the rug. In a dining room, allow at least 60 cm beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, allow 45–60 cm of rug either side of the bed. Custom dimensions are available on most pieces — enter your measurements on this page, or speak with a design consultant.
Craftsmanship
The design is traced onto the backing and worked tuft by tuft with a hand tool, then sheared and carved so the pattern stands in relief. Finishing, binding and the final shear are all done by hand.
Delivery & Shipping
The 4×6 ft rug is finished and waiting in our studio, dispatched within 3–5 business days. Every other size is made to order, crafted in 4–6 weeks and then dispatched. All rugs travel by safe, insured delivery, rolled and wrapped for transit. A rug may arrive with fold marks or a slight curl at the edges — lay it flat and allow a few days for it to settle. International freight is quoted at checkout.
