Description
The Kutch is a village medallion drawn at full volume: a stepped ivory star held inside a flaring navy centre, set on a saffron field and ringed by an ivory border of red and indigo flowers. The palette is the one Kutch dyes into its embroidered and block-printed cloth — saffron, indigo and madder red, with a thread of turmeric yellow outlining every shape.
It is hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool. Each strand is punched through a cotton canvas backing with a hand-held tool, then the pile is sheared level by hand to a dense, even cut that sits close and soft underfoot. The colours are dyed deep so they hold their saturation, and each motif is edged in a contrasting line so the pattern reads clearly from across the room.
This is a rug that sets the tone rather than follows it. It brings warmth and energy to a white or pale room, holds its own beside brass and dark timber, and is happy under a bench, at the foot of a bed or in a reading corner. The full border frames the field on all four sides, so it looks finished from every direction.
A new tufted wool rug sheds some loose fibre for the first few weeks; it settles with regular vacuuming. The ivory border will show traffic before the saffron and navy, so rotate the rug twice a year to keep wear even.
The 4 × 6 ft rug photographed here is in stock and ready to ship. Four larger standard sizes, up to 9 × 12 ft, are made to order in 4–6 weeks, as is any size cut to your exact measurements — the medallion and border are redrawn to the new proportions rather than stretched.

Materials & Construction — Hand-Tufted
Wool is punched through a stretched canvas backing with a hand-held tufting tool, secured with a latex adhesive and finished with a cotton scrim. The result is a dense, deeply plush pile with the pattern carved in relief — the softest underfoot of our constructions.
Made by hand from natural yarn, so slight variation in colour, pile height and finished dimensions is intrinsic to the piece, not a defect.
Rug Care
- Vacuum periodically with the beater bar or brush roll switched off — suction only. Never brush or scrub the pile.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Press, don’t rub — rubbing drives the stain deeper and distorts the weave.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
- Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to prevent flattening and permanent indentation.
- If a thread lifts, never pull it — trim it level with the pile using sharp scissors.
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the dyes.
- Expect noticeable shedding for the first few months. This is normal for a tufted pile and reduces steadily with gentle, regular vacuuming.
- Because the pile is set into an adhesive backing, never soak or steam clean this rug — excess moisture breaks down the backing. Have it dry-cleaned by a rug specialist.
- An underlay is recommended — it stops slipping, cushions the pile and extends the life of the rug.
- Have the rug professionally cleaned periodically. Avoid machine washing, bleach and harsh solvents.
Sizing & Placement
As a guide: in a living room, the front legs of all seating should rest on the rug. In a dining room, allow at least 60 cm beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, allow 45–60 cm of rug either side of the bed. Custom dimensions are available on most pieces — enter your measurements on this page, or speak with a design consultant.
Craftsmanship
The design is traced onto the backing and worked tuft by tuft with a hand tool, then sheared and carved so the pattern stands in relief. Finishing, binding and the final shear are all done by hand.
Delivery & Shipping
The 4×6 ft rug is finished and waiting in our studio, dispatched within 3–5 business days. Every other size is made to order, crafted in 4–6 weeks and then dispatched. All rugs travel by safe, insured delivery, rolled and wrapped for transit. A rug may arrive with fold marks or a slight curl at the edges — lay it flat and allow a few days for it to settle. International freight is quoted at checkout.
