A sideboard for the wall that can't take a sideboard. Ninety centimetres wide and 45 deep, with the same leather, kilim and brass as our full-size pieces, and none of the bulk.

The carcass is engineered board, clad in hand-cut leather across the front, around every edge and along the base. Engineered board is the deliberate choice over solid timber: it holds its shape through Indian monsoons and air-conditioned winters rather than splitting or warping the way a solid-wood carcass eventually will. A single panel of vintage kilim covers the top, and another runs the full face of each flank, every one framed in stitched leather. Cast corner caps in antique brass guard all eight corners, the way they would on a travelling trunk.

Three drawers stack down the left: leather fronts above and below, a framed kilim front between them, with brass-studded leather rails dividing each one. They run on soft-close runners that draw themselves shut the last inch. On the right, a single door is laid with four kilim panels quartered by studded leather straps, and opens to one open compartment — deep enough for table linen, a bar's worth of bottles, or the chargers and remotes a living room collects. The inside of the door is lined in a soft brown nap. Drawers and door open by round antique-brass knobs with a twisted rope edge.

The back is finished in the same brown nap and bound in leather at the edges, so the piece sits cleanly against a wall or can stand behind a sofa. It is lifted on four tapered legs in solid wood, set into a dark timber rail, high enough to clear a rug and a broom.

Each kilim panel is hand-cut from a vintage rug, so no two sideboards are alike. The exact pattern, colours and weave will differ from the photographs, and the panels will not match one another — the top, the flanks, the drawer and the four door panels each come from a different part of the weave. That one-of-a-kind character is the essence of the piece, not a variation to be corrected.

The leather is finished with a light wax rather than a heavy pigment. It will mark, warm and deepen where hands fall most often, around the knobs and along the top edge, and the brass will dull to a soft amber. Being a natural hide it carries its own record: shade variation, the occasional scar. Both leather and brass are expected to change, and both improve the piece.
