Most sideboards are symmetrical because symmetry is easy. This one isn't. Three drawers stack down the left, two tall cupboards share the right, and the whole piece is bound in leather and kilim like a trunk packed for a long journey and never unpacked.

The carcass is engineered board, clad in hand-cut leather across the front rail, around every corner and down to a leather-bound plinth. Engineered board is the deliberate choice over solid timber here: across this width it holds its shape through humidity rather than splitting or warping the way a solid-wood carcass eventually will. Vintage kilim covers the top in six panels divided by studded leather straps, and runs the full height of both flanks in three stacked bands. Every panel is framed by a leather band and held with a run of brass domed studs, and stitched leather caps take every corner.

Each drawer front is a single framed panel of kilim. Each cupboard door is built in three tiers — kilim above, plain leather through the centre, kilim below — so the pattern frames the handle rather than competing with it. The drawers run on soft-close runners that draw themselves shut the last inch. Behind the two doors is one open, full-width compartment with a fixed shelf, wide enough for platters and table linen, bar bottles or files, depending on the room you put it in. Drawers and doors all open by round brass knobs.

The back is finished in a soft brown nap and bound in leather at the edges and corners, so it sits cleanly against a wall.

Each kilim panel is hand-cut from a vintage rug, so no two sideboards are alike. The exact pattern, colours and weave will differ from the photographs, and the panels will not match one another — that one-of-a-kind character is the essence of the piece, not a variation to be corrected.

The leather is finished with a light wax rather than a heavy pigment. It will mark, warm and deepen where hands fall most often, and the brass will dull to a soft amber. Both are expected, and both improve the piece.
