The leather-topped trunk. Kilim runs across all four sides; the lid is a single panel of hide — a flat, wipeable surface, which makes this the one to stand a lamp and a glass on.

The lid lifts back on hinges to a deep, suede-lined well — no shelf, no divider, just one clear volume for throws, board games and the things a living room quietly accumulates. Trunk and lid are lined throughout in a soft velvet-nap suede, so what goes in comes out unmarked.

Each kilim panel is hand-cut from an assorted vintage rug, which is why the pattern shown here will not be the pattern that arrives. The motifs run in the geometric diamond language of the weavers who made them — indigo, madder red, ochre and undyed cream, softened by age. Panels are set into leather the way glass is set into a frame, seamed and saddle-stitched at every join.

A stitched leather carry handle on brass mounts sits centred on each end, so the trunk can be lifted and moved without a second pair of hands. A leather strap and turning brass catch hold the lid closed. Domed studs trace the leather bands top and bottom, brass brackets cap the corners at the lid line, and shaped leather corner pieces protect all eight edges.

Every panel is hand-cut and hand-stitched over an engineered-board carcass — chosen deliberately over solid timber, because it holds its shape through humidity and won't split or warp at the corners the way a solid-wood box eventually will.

The leather carries a vintage pull-up finish, so the tone shifts across each panel and deepens where hands fall most often. Being a natural hide it carries its own record — shade variation, the occasional scar or mark. These are not flaws to be corrected; they are the difference between leather and a print of it.

At 45 cm cubed it reads as furniture rather than a box — a bedside, a sofa-side table, or a lamp table in a hallway. If you would rather the kilim ran across the lid as well, the Amer is the kilim-topped version of this trunk.
