A trunk coffee table with the depth to hold its own in front of a deep sofa. At 75 cm front to back, the top reaches toward the seat — room for a tray, a stack of books and a lamp without crowding, and in proportion with a generous three-seater or an L-shape, where a narrower table can look undersized.

It is a steamer trunk set up on a stand, at the height a coffee table should be. The body is wrapped entirely in leather and saddle-stitched along every seam, then lifted onto a solid wood plinth so it reads as furniture rather than luggage on the floor.

There are two drawers, one in each long face, so the table works from both sides of the room. Each is faced in the same hide, pulled by a stitched leather strap on metal mounts, and runs on soft-close runners that draw it shut the last inch. The insides are lined in velvet-nap suede, which keeps remotes, coasters and cards from sliding about.

Either side of the drawer, a trunk catch sits on its own leather panel. The top is laid in three panels divided by two studded leather straps that run its full length, and each end carries a pair of studded straps top to bottom, with the Art Avenue maker's tag set beside them. Shaped metal caps protect all eight corners — catches, studs and caps are finished together in your choice of metal.

The carcass is engineered board, and deliberately so: across a top this broad, carrying trays, books and feet, a laminated panel stays flat where solid timber moves with the seasons. The plinth and its tapered legs are solid wood, stained to your choice of finish.

The leather is finished to show its natural movement, so the tone shifts as light crosses it. Along the top, where hands and cups land, it will darken and soften into a patina of its own. Being hide, it carries its own record — shade variation, the occasional scar or mark — and no two tables will look quite alike.

For smaller rooms and narrower sofas, the same design is made 60 cm deep as the Kuchaman.
