Description

A four-poster without the canopy: tall turned posts at the head, a deep-buttoned headboard between them, and a panelled footboard that rises at each corner to its own finial. It has the presence of an old planter's bed and none of the overhead weight.

The headboard stands 145 cm high inside a broad moulded frame, its top rail stepped at each shoulder and cut back in a concave curve at the corners. Within the frame the upholstery is deep-buttoned in a diamond grid, each button drawn down into the padding so the cloth folds softly between them.

The head posts are turned by hand from solid wood — collars, rings and a long tapering shaft — and finish in a spire finial at around 180 cm. At the foot, two square posts carry turned urn finials, and the footboard's top rail sweeps down between them in a shallow curve over two raised, fielded panels. The side rails carry the same framed panel from head to foot, and the whole bed stands on turned bun feet.

The headboard is upholstered in your choice of ten linens and seventeen velvets, at the same price whichever you choose. The copper-toned printed floral in the photographs is made on request, and the headboard can also be upholstered in a fabric you supply — a family textile, or a print chosen with your designer.

Order it with storage and a wide drawer slides out from beneath each side rail on soft-close runners, one for each of you, so neither has to walk round the bed. The fronts are panelled to continue the line of the rail, so the bed looks the same closed as it does without them. Without storage, the space between the bun feet stays open and easy to sweep.

Posts, rails and feet are solid wood. The broad panels in the footboard and side rails, and the drawer boxes, are engineered board, which stays flat and true across a two-metre span where solid timber would cup and move with the seasons. The mattress rests on a solid wood slatted base that lets it breathe.

The frame is shown in Blackwood, a near-black stain that keeps the grain just visible in raking light. It is also made in Natural Teak, a clear satin lacquer that shows the honey tone of the wood, and in Woodland, English Chestnut and Walnut — and each of the four stains, Blackwood included, also comes in a wire-brushed Country texture, where the open grain stands proud under the hand.

Wood and cloth are natural materials. Grain and tone vary from board to board and the finish mellows with years of daylight; linen softens where it is leaned against, and velvet pile shifts colour with the light. Vacuum the headboard with a soft brush attachment, dust the wood with a dry cloth, and keep both out of prolonged direct sun.

Worth measuring before you order
  • The space the piece will stand in, leaving room to walk around it
  • Doorways, corridors and any corner the piece has to turn
  • The stairwell or lift, if it isn’t a ground-floor delivery

Your piece is built after you order it rather than taken off a shelf, so we’d rather you check these measurements against your room first — made-to-order pieces can’t be returned or exchanged. Being handmade, finished dimensions may vary by a centimetre or two.

If these proportions aren’t quite right for your space, we can change them. Speak to a design consultant before you order and we’ll build the piece to your measurements.

Materials

Built from carefully selected, natural materials — kiln-dried hardwoods, hand-spun textiles, cast metal and quarried stone, chosen to last for decades. Naturally occurring grain and tone variation is intrinsic to each handmade piece.

Fabric care

Vacuum gently and regularly with an upholstery attachment to lift dust before it settles. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — press, don’t rub — and avoid soaking the fabric. Plump and rotate loose cushions so they wear evenly. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve colour, and have delicate weaves cleaned professionally rather than machine-washed.

Craftsmanship

Carved, joined and finished by hand in our workshops, passing through the hands of several craftspeople. Joinery is mortise-and-tenon — never glued shortcuts — so the piece is made to be kept and passed down.

Assembly & Installation

Most pieces arrive securely packed and ready to use. Some larger items may require simple assembly; installation assistance may be available depending on the product and your location — speak with a consultant to confirm before ordering.

Care

Dust timber with a soft dry cloth and treat with wax balm twice yearly. Vacuum upholstery gently and treat marks promptly. Keep out of prolonged direct sun to preserve the finish.
